CHARACTER NAME: Caden Carter
CHARACTER AGE: 29
SPECIES: Witch (but he doesn't know it yet)
BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Caden was born and raised on the central coast of California. His parents were young and unprepared for a family. They tried to make it work, but after Caden's little sister Callie was born five years later, his father took off and was never really heard from again. His mother did her best to support her two children, and as a result of her busy work schedule Caden and Callie were often left to their own devices.
They didn't have a lot of money, but they got by. Caden was a very good student, dilligent and highly intelligent, and received a scholarship to Stanford University. He studied creative writing and published his first novel by the age of 23. He quickly rose to popularity as an author of fiction novels based around the supernatural. Not used to having excess money, he leaves most of it forgotten in a savings account after paying off his mother's mortgage and his sister's college tuition.
Caden has had a few relationships, some more serious than others, but he always knew they weren't the person that he was meant to spend his life with. He hasn't suffered any great heartache and finding love isn't his top priority, but he's still a romantic at heart and doesn't take those sort of entanglements lightly. He keeps his heart open to the possibility, but he isn't actively searching for it right now.
He's new to Siren Cove, having moved to the city to write his next book. He stumbled across the town while researching and all that he learned about it was mysterious and intriguing enough to draw him to it for inspiration.
PERSONALITY: Caden is sort of quiet and fairly easygoing. To a stranger, he would come across as shy, but he's charming and friendly once they take the time to get to know him. He's highly intelligent and very creative, and prefers to observe rather than interact at times. This isn't to say that he doesn't cut loose and have fun, but he's more likely to want a quiet night at home or a small gathering of friends than a night out partying.
He has a dry sense of humor and a fondness for sarcasm. He loves to laugh and has no problem making jokes at his own expense. It would be easy for him to have a big ego, due to his fame and the acknowledgment of his talent, but he's stayed very down to earth and true to his roots.
Caden keeps a cool head and doesn't anger easily, but he's fiercely protective of those he loves. (The only fight he's ever been in was with a jock who made his sister cry. He won.) He doesn't have much patience for bullshit and has a good eye for those who seem to want him for his fame or money, and is quick to avoid those people.
Really, Caden is fairly quiet and keeps to himself, but he's funny, intelligent and gracious. He likes making friends, and is known to have his head in the clouds at times. His overactive imagination can distract him, and he can get kind of laser-focused when he's on a roll with his writing.
Overall he's a good dude, doesn't make much trouble, and he just wants to make himself at home in Siren Cove without any fanfare so he can start his new book.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: While researching Siren Cove before his arrival, Caden came across a few mentions of the rivalry, but nothing too detailed and he chalked most of it up to being nothing but rumors and gossip. He has no connections to the town and has little knowledge of its origins, so he has no real opinion on the rivalry upon his arrival.
LIFESTYLE: As mentioned above, Caden has found success as an author of paranormal fiction. He's well known and one of his books is being shopped as a potential studio film. Caden is technically rich, but he's vaguely uncomfortable with all the money at his disposal and doesn't really spend more than he needs. He gives a portion to charity and helps his mother and sister out when they need it, and he doesn't spend much time thinking about the balance on his bank statements.
Caden grew up near the coast, in a sleepy little town, and preferred that over the two years he spent living in San Francisco after graduating college. He doesn't like to be far from the ocean, and that was another draw of Siren Cove.
He's renting a modest house on the beach for the duration of his stay in Siren Cove and often surfs in the mornings (when he gets up in time). He doesn't function well without his coffee and likes spending time outdoors. He enjoys reading, but he doesn't read fiction in the middle of writing a book because he doesn't want to be influenced by outside works. Caden is committed to his career as an author, and he considers himself incredibly lucky to have a profession that he genuinely loves.
After some experimenting in college, Caden came to the realization that he is bisexual. He's fairly open about it and has no qualms about his sexuality. He's had relationships with both men and women. He seems to form stronger emotional connections with women and enjoys sex more with men, but he doesn't consider himself to have a strong preference for either gender. If he likes someone, he likes them no matter their gender.<br
POWERS & ABILITIES: Caden is a witch, but he doesn't know it yet. The powers come from his father's side, but since his father never displayed any abilities, he assumed that it had died out and didn't bother warning Caden or his mother before he stepped out of their lives.
Strange things happen to him sometimes, such as the rain stopping just when he needs to go outside, or some perfect waves rolling in when he makes it to the beach far past prime surfing hours. He's never thought much of it, and has always chalked it up to luck. He's made his career in writing supernatural fiction, all the while not knowing that he's a supernatural being himself. When he finds out about this, he'll have a good laugh and then try to figure out how to use it as research.
At this point, I am not sure what the full extent of his abilities will be. I'm thinking he'll be able to manipulate the weather with relative ease once he realizes that he has the ability. After some time and practice, he'll be able to pick up other basic spells, but potions will never be his strong suit.
He isn't aware of the supernatural element of the town, aside from rumors that he never really took seriously, but my plan is that when Caden learns that it is indeed real and he starts spending time around magical people, he will come to realize his own potential. Caden isn't the type of person to get drunk with power, and he will be excited but cautious as he navigates this whole new part of himself.
