plotting!

Caden is new to town, and doesn't know anyone. Does your character want to show him around, ask him out, get together to play some basketball, etc? Do they recognize him as the author of one of their favorite books?

Caden is a fairly easygoing and friendly guy that's open for pretty much anything. He likes making friends and meeting new people, is a bit of a foodie, loves to surf, and blushes when people flirt with him.

If you want Caden for anything, drop me a line and we'll work something out!

a letter to the one i never will forget (closed; april)

The ball is swiftly approaching and the more Caden watches Joel and Spencer interact, so obviously in love, the more secure he is in his decision. It’s strange to think that soon he’ll be engaged, and married shortly thereafter. He spoke to the women his mother had invited to Joel’s birthday with an open mind, and there was one that actually did catch his eye. Not in a romantic way per se, though she is beautiful, but because she seems to view the entire thing much like Caden himself. Her parents want to marry her off to someone above her station, and she’s doing it to make them happy and try to make a better life for herself in the process. She’s witty and smart, and Caden could see them becoming good friends. If he has to take a wife, he could do worse than her.

It’s not that he’s dreading being married. It just isn’t something that he ever saw in his future. Not after April, at least.

And that’s the problem. Caden’s life is about to change in a very drastic way, and April is not going to be a part of it. She hasn’t been a part of his life for a very long time, not really, but he thinks about her every day. His heart still aches for her, and he can’t marry someone and possibly lead a nation with this weight on his shoulders. It wouldn’t be fair to anyone, least of all himself.

It’s time to do his best to move on. He needs to say goodbye. So he sits down in the library, and he writes a letter. It’s a very arduous process, but there is something almost cathartic about it. Still, it’s with a very heavy heart that he gives the letter to one of his most trusted footmen with instructions to deliver it to April. He’s jealous of him, almost, for getting to lay eyes upon her, but he pushes the feeling aside.

He dreams of April that night, but it’s not of her coming back to him, as it so often is.

In this dream, he’s the one walking away.

My dearest April,

It’s been quite some time since I’ve had to try and find the right words to say to you, so forgive me if they come out jumbled.

I sincerely hope that you are doing well, and that you are happy. I don’t know what you’ve been up to, or if you even still think of me. I do not have so much pride that I cannot tell you that I haven’t thought of you. I have, each and every day. You’re still a part of my life, no matter how long ago you left it.

I loved you from the moment I saw you, I’m sure. I know you think such things as love at first sight are silly, but I do believe that’s what happened. And each and every day, my love grew. Our time together is my most cherished memory, and it is one I look back on often. Perhaps too often, but I couldn’t help myself.

I love you, April, but I do understand why that was not enough. My life is not a simple one, but I grew up with it being all I knew. The pressures of such a life or not easy to bear, and I do not blame you for not wanting to take on such difficulties just to be with me. I do wish things could have gone better, but I blame you for nothing. Your happiness has always been my primary concern, even if that happiness was not found at my side.

Given the chance, I would have let my heart ache for you for the rest of my life, but things are changing. I cannot go on as I have been. I’ve watched something incredible happen. My brother has fallen in love and I’ve never been so happy for him. It’s a spectacular thing they have together and I am going to do my best to help keep that love alive. I want them to succeed where we failed, and it is for that reason that I am going to take a bride so that he doesn’t have to. My responsibility to my family has already cost me a great deal, and I am going to keep paying that price with a smile on my face so that my brother can live the life he deserves.

I will never love another the way I loved you, April. That much is certain. You will always hold a large piece of my heart, but it’s time that I finally let the jagged edges of it heal into something usable again. I must move on with my life if I expect to make something of it, and that is the point of this letter.

I wish you all the love and happiness in the world, April Ross, but I have to let you go. It’s time to say goodbye.

Always,
Caden

(closed; spencer. fairytale plot. dated mid-week.)

The ball is just over a week away, and time is running out. For all that Joel is searching for other options, Caden thinks the choice is clear. It was easy to make peace with his decision. Caden has already loved and lost, and his heart is damaged. It could never belong to another anyway, mangled as it is. A quiet marriage out of convenience is really the best he could hope for, and maybe he'll even find a lovely companion. A friend.

It's not what Caden would have chosen for himself, but as he told his brother, what he would have chosen is impossible. So he can do this, as long as it ensures Joel's happiness. When he thinks of it that way, it's the easiest choice in the world.

Caden has spent time with Joel and Spencer, and he's enjoyed it, even if seeing them interact leaves a hollow ache just behind his breastbone. He and April used to look at each other like that. Or maybe it was just him looking at her, and the rest is a misremembered dream. Sometimes he wonders if she ever loved him at all, or if he's just a fool for clinging to her memory all this time.

Now it's time for Caden to seek Spencer out on his own. He has some questions to ask, and he knows Spencer will be able to answer them without words. He just needs this final thing to cement his decision, and he heads for the beach after a member of the staff tells him that she saw Spencer heading that way. He takes a basket of freshly made cookies and makes his way down towards the sand. Spencer is sitting at the water's edge with the waves washing over his bare feet, and Caden heads for him with an easy smile on on his face.

"Spencer, hello. I was wondering if I could speak with you?" He wrinkles his nose and laughs softly, reaching up to scratch the back of his neck. "Or speak at you, as the case may be."

Caden sort of misses cohabiting with April. Not that it was in any official capacity, or for any real length of time, but it had felt good to have April staying in his home, to wake up next to her in the morning. It was something that Caden felt he could easily get used to.

He's not foolish enough to ask her to move in with him now that they're back in Siren Cove. It's too soon, for one. They're not even officially committed to each other as a couple, and neither one of them are in any way prepared for something like that. He understands why it would be a bad idea, but still. It's nice to think about, all the same.

They're in April's apartment in Siren Cove, the one she'd gotten shortly before they'd left, and Caden is helping her finally unpack. She doesn't have a huge amount of belongings so it's not a terribly slow-going job, but Caden keeps getting distracted. She's trusting him with her personal things, and he doesn't want to pry, but it's hard to unpack a box without looking at all the things in it.

Perhaps he's overthinking this.

"Hey, do you want to go somewhere for dinner or order in?" Caden asks, face hidden behind a heavy bookshelf as he moves it across the room. The t-shirt he's in is threadbare and a little small for him, but it's one he doesn't mind getting dirty. He puts the bookshelf down near the window and takes a step back to make sure it's centered and then looks over his shoulder at April. "Do you like this here?"

every place i go, i think of you (open to all)

(timed to late friday afternoon.)

April is gone.

She stayed to spend Christmas with Caden, to kiss him at midnight on New Year's Eve, and the next day she was gone. She'll stay in touch, she assured him. She'll come back someday, she says, but for now she's gone. Just like Caden feared would happen. He isn't upset with her. He gets it and he wants her to be happy. But he just really didn't want to let her go.

Now Caden is just tired. He just wants to go home. Because whatever Siren Cove is, it isn't that. That's San Francisco - his place in Ocean Beach, his mom's place in Pacifica. That whole thing about leaving your heart in San Francisco? It's totally true. His heart is there, along with his family, and that's where he needs to be.

Luckily, Caden has the luxury of being transient. It's not like he's written anything since Les dumped him anyway. He came to Siren Cove for a change of scenery, and now he needs another one. It'll be good to spend some time with his family, with his beloved west coast. He needs time away from here.

He has a few bags packed and ready to go, and he gets dressed and heads to Quill to grab a cup of their amazing coffee for the road. There are things he will miss about Siren Cove, and that coffee is one of them.

It's not forever. He'll be back. He just has no idea when.

[Catch Caden anywhere between his place on the beach and Quill with a plane ticket sticking out of his pocket. This will be the last chance to talk to him for awhile, as he's getting out of dodge for now.]

(closed; april. set to the night of the 23rd.)

Caden isn't sure what to do, but he doesn't want to be alone. He doesn't want April to be alone.

He isn't sure where he stands with her now, or what is going to happen between them now that Les is out of the picture, but Caden cares for her deeply. It kills him to know that she's upset and probably doing her best not to show it, knowing her. He has no idea if April will want to see him, but he has to try. Whatever she wants, he'll obviously respect that, but he'll have to give her the chance to tell him.

Should be bring anything? That would probably be stupid. Sorry we got dumped, here's some flowers? He stands in the middle of his living room for a moment before going over to his liquor cabinet and grabbing a nice bottle of scotch. They could probably use that, at least.

He takes a cab over to April's and bites his lip as he knocks on the door. He's sad, hurt, and a little pissed, but April meant more to Les. He meant more to her. Caden wants to be there for April in whatever she needs, whether is someone to commiserate with, or drink with, or vent to. He can do any and all of those things.

But he needs her, and he just hopes she doesn't turn him away. She opens the door and Caden gives her a wry smile, holding up the scotch with a shrug. "I'm not sure what the protocol here is, but I thought booze was a given. Want some company?"

(closed; coop. backdated to 12/23.)

What's the most upsetting is that he can't surf. The water is too cold for him to even step foot into it, and that's why he's just sitting on the beach at the water's edge, arms wrapped around his knees while he stares out at the waves. The water always makes him feel better, and he can't even do that right now.

He isn't sure why he's so upset. It hasn't even been two months, and to his knowledge they weren't even serious, but it's never fun to be dumped. Maybe it's because he was just starting to fall for Les, and because he's not the only one hurt. April is probably with Les right now while he sits here, and he feels like it's all his fault that she's going to get hurt as well. Maybe if he had just kept his mouth shut they would be together right now.

He's also a little pissed off, because who dumps someone right before Christmas? Now Caden feels like the holiday is ruined, after he stayed in Siren Cove instead of going home to be with his family so that he could spend it with Les and April instead.

But now he's just sitting here with his ass in the sand, full on moping. Merry Christmas.

must be the season of the witch (closed; les)

It's been quite a month for Caden.

He ended his long dry spell by entering a polyamorous relationship with two amazing people. At least, he assumes this is what's happened. They haven't really talked about it, but that's okay. They're figuring things out just as much as he is, and he doesn't need labels. He's having a good time.

Then, shortly after, Les got taken and Caden and April worried. And then Caden got taken, and they had to sit in a weird fantasy cave for days before finally being rescued by April and a group of sirens. And then Caden attended what was probably the oddest Thanksgiving family dinner he's ever experienced.

But he survived it all with lots of new inspiration to boot, and he's in a good mood as November draws to a chilly close. He'd finished up a bout of writing with the urge to see Les, so he sets out for his place. They'd made plans in that cave, and he thinks it's about time they made good on them.

He stops for coffee and gets to Les's place with a warm cup in each hand, much like that first time, and rings the doorbell with his elbow. Maybe he should have called first, but oh well. Here's to hoping he isn't busy.

[circle of sirens] beyond the fog lies clarity (the disappearance of caden carter)

It’s been five days since Les went missing, six since the first victim, and they know nothing. Well, Corinne has a clue, apparently. Caden hopes it pans out.

God, victim. That makes it sound too real. It wasn’t too long ago that he was excited by this town’s apparent eccentricities, but this one is far less amusing. People are disappearing into thin air, one or two a day, and no one knows why or when it will stop. If it will stop. It sounds almost like a plot to one of Caden’s novels, but they’re all living it.

The town is quiet as Caden makes his way through it, bundled up against the morning chill. He’d run out quickly to go check in with Corrine and get some food for him and April. Caden didn’t have much to begin with and as hard as they’re trying, they can’t live on coffee alone.

His phone rings and Caden nearly drops the bag of food in his scramble to retrieve it from his pocket. He keeps jumping whenever his phone makes a noise in the hopes that it’s good news, but it never is. Now, it’s his sister’s face grinning up at him as his phone rings, and normally he’s happy when she calls him. But Callie has always been able to read him like a book and he really doesn’t want to tell her what’s wrong right now. He doesn’t want to say it out loud to anyone that doesn’t already know.

But still, it’s very early in San Francisco and Caden is a doting big brother, so he answers and tries not to sound as scared and frustrated as he feels. “Hey, Calico. What are you doing up so early?”

”Doing a walk of glory,” Callie informs him, sounding tired but cheerful. “It’s like a walk of shame except I’m not ashamed of myself at all, because I just had hella good sex and I’m proud of my accomplishments.

Caden wrinkles his nose but he can’t help but to chuckle softly at her antics. Callie is five years younger than him but she’s always been more gregarious, louder and brighter and funnier. She’s shameless. Caden loves her with all of his heart. “Thanks for the information. Was that the only reason you called?”

I just called to say I love you.” She sings it, like she always does, and Caden nearly tears up from how much he loves her blending with all the other emotions that he’s feeling. “And I figured that you were either up staring at your laptop or staring forlornly at the ocean because it’s too cold to surf.

“It’s never too cold,” Caden says on instinct. “I’m a polar bear.”

You freaking weirdo. You’re gonna freeze one day and someone will find you and unthaw you in seventy years and expect you to save the world. And then what will you do?”

“Not live in a comic book,” Caden replies. He’s nearly back home now, and there’s a thick fog rolling in off of the ocean. “Hey, it looks like Karl came to visit me.”

Karl is the name affectionately given by the residents of San Francisco to the fog that often shrouds the city. Caden smiles as he walks towards the water because the fog reminds him of home, and of his family who he loves. He’s always rather liked the fog.

Tell him I said to stay there. Oh so hey, mom wanted me to ask you what you’re doing for the holidays. You should call her and tell her because I won’t remember to. And now I’m at my apartment so I’m going to hop in the shower and sleep for three days. Caden, are you there?” He blinks and shakes himself after he realizes that he’d just been staring into the fog. It’s crawling towards him and Caden hears something, he thinks, so he pulls the phone away to listen for it. “Caden? Earth to big bro. Stop spacing out while you’re on the phone with your beloved baby sister, you dip.

“Callie, I’m gonna go,” he tells her, because he’s suddenly too distracted to carry on a conversation. “Thanks for calling. I love you.”

I love you too. Are you okay?” Caden assures her that he is and there’s a pause before she continues. “Call me later, okay?”

“I will,” he promises. “Bye, Calico.”

When he hangs up his back deck is in sight and he knows that April is in there waiting for him. He wants to go to her and curl up next to her. He wants Les to be there with them. He wants a lot of things.

“Caden, is that you?”

He tears his gaze away from his back door to see a man walking out of the fog and coming towards him. There’s something vaguely familiar about him, but Caden doesn’t know what it is. But then the man smiles and it hits him, startling him so badly that he drops the bag of hot food he was carrying onto the sand.

… Dad?

merrier the more, triple fun that way (closed; les & april)

Caden has no idea what the hell he's doing.

Tonight's dinner is more than just a dinner, he's pretty sure. But he's also not sure. Maybe it's presumptuous to think that April and Les are going to do anything more than feed him. Or - give him food, not feed him.

God.

He almost calls his sister because she's kind of the epitome of a San Francisco free loving hippie (minus the patchouli, thank god) and she might have some good advice, but he doesn't. This is still too new, and it might not even be anything. Maybe he'll just go over there and eat and pine and then go home alone.

Maybe he won't.

In any case, it's time to go and worrying won't help him any. He's just going to go in with an open mind and low expectations, and whatever happens happens. He's dressed somewhat casually, but he put effort into looking nice, doing his hair and putting on just a touch of the cologne that he always gets compliments on. There's nothing else left to do but go.

He walks to Les's building instead of taking a cab in hopes that the air will clear his head, and he gets two different comments from passersby wishing him luck on his date. Caden looks down at his outfit and then at the small bouquet danging from one hand and the bottle of expensive port he has in the other. April is worth more than flowers, but the simple arrangement of tiger lilies seemed to suit her, and you don't bring guys flowers, so he picked up the wine. In his mind, he was just trying to be a good guest, but maybe it looks like he's trying too hard. Oh well, too late now.

There's a few minutes before he's supposed to arrive, but he's too nervous to wait. After taking a few deep breaths and rolling his shoulders, to reaches up to ring the doorbell. He hears movement inside and his heart is in his throat, but he's smiling. No matter what happens, he likes April and Les and he's happy to spend time with them.

It'll be fun.

open to all!

Leave it to Caden to move into a new house in a new town and then immediately leave it for a month.

The publicity tour for his new book ran longer than he expected, thanks to his silver-tongued publicist. She can talk Caden into things in a way that will leave him swearing that it was his idea all along. That's what he pays her for, he supposes.

But he's home, finally, with bags under his eyes and a sore wrist from signing an obscene number of books. He's exhausted in a good way, pleased and humbled in a way that he only gets after interacting with fans.

Coming back to Siren Cove feels new all over again. He didn't really have a chance to truly settle and make friends before he had to leave again. He's here to stay this time, at least for awhile. Publicity is done, and after he does the signing at Joel's bookstore, his time is his own.

But right now, he isn't going to think about work. No, he isn't going to think about anything that isn't getting his board into that briny surf. His house is airing out and he's in his wetsuit, two cups of coffee warming his belly, and a freshly waxed board his arm. The sun is high in the sky and warm, despite the changing season, and Caden grins as he hops off of his back deck to land barefoot in the sand.

The grin fades when he sees the calm waters, waves lapping gently at the shore. All he'd wanted was to surf, and there's no way that he can do anything in this. He stares the water down petulantly, trying to will some decent waves into being.

"Come on," he mutters under his breath, looking at the water longingly. "Give me something."

He paddles out anyway, laying on his back on the board with his eyes closed and letting the calm water lull him into relaxation as he skims his fingers along the surface. "Just a few good waves, man. That's all I'm asking."

All of a sudden he's upended, flipped off of his board by a sudden wave that he was completely unprepared for, and he's laughing when he breaks the surface of the water. It's rushing in quickly now, providing some perfect barrels for him to ride. Caden has no idea where they came from, but he sure as hell isn't complaining.

It's just what he needed.

He surfs until his lungs ache and his cheeks hurt from grinning, and then lets the tide carry him back to shore. He's exhausted in the best way when he flops down onto the sand with one hand resting on the gleaming surface of his board. The water seems to calm as soon as he's out of it, crashing waves settling into the water lapping gently at the sand just a few inches from Caden's bare feet.

Yeah, it's good to be home.

no place like home

Caden rents a beach house on the shore. It isn't huge, and it comes with a loft bedroom and an office for him to write in.
